Vibe Magazine Shutting Down Immediately

Is this:

  1. A sign of the general economic times
  2. A sign of the decline of print media
  3. A sign of nothing in particular?

Discuss!

B is For Bob (full album online)

I’m probably not in the habit of discussing individual releases, but as a dad, this one is a special exception. I grew up listening to my dad’s Bob Marley albums, and now my kids get to hear the same songs, made perhaps a little more appealing for them (at 6 and 8). Definitely a must-have — and the songs are available to listen to for free online right now:

B is for Bob is a collection of original Bob Marley songs re-imagined for kids and fans of all ages!!
The international musical legend’s eldest son, four-time Grammy winner Ziggy Marley, executive produced the album, which bridges the gap between the timeless Bob Marley and a new generation of kids.
Bob Marley’s music touches people of all ages. With children in mind, Ziggy has transformed 8 of his father’s songs while leaving 4 of Bob Marley’s other masterpieces untouched.
Released just in time for summer, this is the perfect album for the entire family to enjoy!

Djembe Strap Tutorial

I used this tutorial to make my own strap for my Djembe out of 2” strapping. I bought about 15 feet of it at REI (off the spool), cost me less than $11.

Playing Djembe standing up is a whole other experience than sitting down.

Fri. Jun 26: Epic Night of Live Music

Tracy Shaun and Keiko Takamura’s band (currently named Hope Squad) both have live gigs on Friday June 26th in the bay area. And here’s the good news: you can go to both in one night! Even better, you can meet me!

Both of my friends are amateurs (for the time being) and need your support. Both of them have interesting stories that I’ll cover in future blog entries. But you need to go see them before they break, so you can say you saw them before they got so damn popular 😉

P.S. Hope Squad is looking for a new name, go tell Keiko on twitter if you are inspired by them with a new name.

Tracy’s show: Friday June 26, Angelica’s Bistro, Redwood City 6pm-8pm. Details.

Hope Squad show: Friday June 26, Checkered Flag Bar & Grill, San Jose, 9:30-??. Details.

#musicmonday on Twitter

If you like talking about music (especially on Mondays), you may want to check out the Twitter hashtag #musicmonday. I’ve also found #funkfriday.

I’m curious if people have seen other music related “day” tags (the idea being that everyone starts talking about a community of music on a particular day of the week). If you find any active ones, post in the comments to this entry!

Playing For Change

Playing for Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music. The idea for this project arose from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. No matter whether people come from different geographic, political, economic, spiritual or ideological backgrounds, music has the universal power to transcend and unite us as one human race. And with this truth firmly fixed in our minds, we set out to share it with the world.

We built a mobile recording studio, equipped with all the same equipment used in the best studios, and traveled to wherever the music took us. As technology changed, our power demands were downsized from golf cart batteries to car batteries, and finally to laptops. Similarly, the quality with which we were able to film and document the project was gradually upgraded from a variety of formats— each the best we could attain at the time—finally to full HD.

A great site with a great purpose. Some great live music videos from around the world.

See them on Twitter @playing4change. Also see PlayingForChange.org, the foundation behind the movement (donate):

If you are inspired by what you’ve seen and heard, donate any amount you can to create positive change through music

Your donation will directly fund the first of many music schools we are building and connecting together.

Now, musicians from all over the world are brought together to perform benefit concerts that build music and art schools in communities that are in need of inspiration and hope. In addition to benefit concerts, the Playing for Change band also performs shows around the world. When audiences see and hear musicians who have traveled thousands of miles from their homes, united in purpose and chorus on one stage, everyone is touched by music’s unifying power.

Finally, check out episode 9 (“Change is Gonna Come”):

This performance demonstrates what happens when some of the musicians from “Stand By Me” meet and perform for the first time. This song was recorded live in New Orleans, and features Grandpa Elliot and Clarence Bekker on vocals. Thousands of people witness first hand the soul and conviction of two men who make us all believe a change is going to come.

Yes, that’s a Djembe on-stage 😉
